Google Analytics 4 Setup and Configuration Guide

Unlike its predecessor Universal Analytics, Google Analytics 4 (GA4) uses an event-based data model where every interaction is modeled as an "event." That difference means the setup needs a different logic too.

1. Set Up Data Streams Correctly

Create separate data streams for your website and, if you have one, your mobile app. Turning on enhanced measurement in the web data stream starts automatically tracking interactions like scrolling, outbound link clicks, and on-site search.

2. Define Your Conversion Goals

Mark the events that matter to your business - a form submission, a purchase, a contact click - as "key events" (formerly conversions). Skip this step and you can't tie campaign performance to real business outcomes.

3. Track Custom Events with Google Tag Manager

GA4's default tracking covers a lot, but business-specific interactions like a phone click, a WhatsApp redirect, or a click on a specific button need custom tags set up through Google Tag Manager.

4. Build Audience Segments

Creating segments - users who visited a specific page but didn't fill out a form, visitors interested in a particular product - enriches your reporting and lets you use these audiences for retargeting in Google Ads or Meta Ads.

5. Adjust Data Retention

GA4's default data retention period is usually short. Raising it to the maximum in the admin settings matters for long-term user behavior analysis.

6. Integrate with Google Search Console

Connecting GA4 to Search Console lets you see, in one place, which search queries drive traffic to which pages and how that traffic behaves on your site.

Conclusion

A properly configured GA4 account gives you a clear view of where your marketing budget is going and what's actually working. Want us to set up your analytics infrastructure? Check out our analytics & reporting service.
